TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Transportation has designated 36 public airports throughout Indonesia as international airports in Minister of Transportation Decree Number KM 37 of 2025.
Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi said the designation is aimed at strengthening the national aviation industry and promoting widespread growth of tourism, trade, and investment across various regions.
Dudy explained that the move comes following President Prabowo's instruction to open as many international airports as possible in various regions. "The President wants to accelerate economic turnover and develop tourism in the regions," Dudy said, as quoted from the official statement on Thursday, August 14, 2025.
Prabowo expressed his hope for more international airports during a limited meeting with several members of the Red and White Cabinet at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor Regency, West Java, on Friday, August 1, 2025.
"The President pushes for the opening of as many international airports as possible in various regions," said Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya in a written statement received by Tempo on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
For Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta, Dudy further said that its international flights are limited to non-scheduled commercial air transport, non-commercial air transport, as well as flights of presidential and foreign aircraft. Minister Dudy assigned the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to evaluate the international airport status at least once every two years to ensure that safety, security, and service standards are met.
"Each airport operator must meet administrative requirements, including safety and international service aspects, no later than six months after the decision is issued," Dudy said.
Director General of Civil Aviation of the Ministry of Transportation, Lukman F. Laisa, explained that naming 36 international airports is a strategy to strengthen Indonesia's position in the global aviation network while prioritizing compliance with safety, security, and passenger comfort standards in accordance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations.
"International status at an airport carries great responsibility. Every airport must ensure immigration, customs, and quarantine facilities are ready before serving direct flights to and from abroad," Lukman said, as quoted from the Ministry of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform (Kemenpan RB) website on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
Lukman added that this designation will not only improve connectivity and facilitate the flow of trade and tourism, but also ensure that international flight services are enjoyed evenly across various regions of Indonesia.
