TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Striker Kylian Mbappe officially became the French national team's top scorer thanks to his two goals against Senegal in the 2026 World Cup Group I match at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, on Tuesday local time.
In that match, Mbappe scored two goals against Senegal, helping France win 3-1, according to FIFA records.
These two goals brought Mbappe's total to 58 goals for France, surpassing the 57 previously held by striker Olivier Giroud.
The 27-year-old has scored 58 goals in 99 matches for the French national team across various competitions since making his debut in 2017.
Furthermore, Mbappe is also in the running to become the top scorer at the World Cup, now tied for third place alongside legendary German striker Gerd Muller.
Mbappe, who has participated in three World Cups (2018, 2022, and 2026) with France, has now scored 14 goals in 15 matches.
The Real Madrid striker needs just three goals in the 2026 World Cup to become the tournament's top scorer.
The current World Cup goal-scoring record is held by legendary German striker Miroslav Klose, who has 16 goals in 24 matches.
Mbappe has a great opportunity to add to his tally as France will play two more matches in Group I of the 2026 World Cup against Iraq and Norway.
Kylian Mbappe also has the opportunity to continue adding to his World Cup goal-scoring tally if France advances further in this tournament.
