TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 shook the southeastern region of Kambowa, North Buton, Southeast Sulawesi, on Tuesday night, May 27, 2025.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the inland quake occurred at 7:27 p.m. local time, 3 kilometers southeast of Kambowa, North Buton.

"From a depth of 6 kilometers," said the Head of the Kendari Geophysical Station, Rudin, in a written statement shortly after the earthquake.

According to Rudin, the shallow earthquake was triggered by the active fault in Southeast Kambowa, North Buton.

Referring to the BMKG shake map, the M4.6 earthquake was felt as far as North Buton, Muna, and Buton with a scale of IV MMI, meaning people inside and outside houses felt the tremor. At this scale, the earthquake's vibration also could break pottery and make windows and doors creak.

Until 7:46 p.m. local time, there were no indications of aftershocks. BMKG also assured no tsunami threats were recorded. "There have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake," said Rudin.
