TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with an updated magnitude of 6.0 rattled the Banda Sea in eastern Indonesia, with tremors felt across parts of Maluku on Friday evening, September 11, 2026, at 06:56 p.m. Jakarta time.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the offshore quake struck 162 kilometers northeast of Southwest Maluku, at 148-kilometer depth.
BMKG's earthquake and tsunami director, Wijayanto, said in a written statement that the earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth, and was triggered by subduction activity in the Banda Sea. Analysis of the quake's movement showed that the tremor had a thrust fault mechanism.
Tsunami modelling results showed that the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami risk.
Strong tremors were felt in Amahai, Central Maluku, as well as Damer and the Babar Islands in Southwest Maluku, at the IV MMI scale.
Meanwhile, a weaker shaking at the III MMI scale was felt in Saumlaki and Tiakur, akin to trucks passing by while indoors.
As of 7:15 p.m. Jakarta time, BMKG did not record any aftershock activity, but assured that it would continue to monitor seismic activity and provide updates to the public.
No immediate reports of damage were received after the initial tremor. BMKG advised residents to remain calm and avoid unverifiable information, as well as staying away from damaged buildings.
