Muhammadiyah: Israel Recognition as State Hinges on Genocide Accountability

1 day ago 7

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Anwar Abbas, the chair of the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah, one of the biggest Islamic organizations in Indonesia, said that Israel can only be recognized if they acknowledge Palestinian independence.

According to Anwar, Indonesia closed any chance for diplomatic ties with Israel due to its occupation of Palestine. On the other hand, Indonesia strongly opposes colonization as it contradicts the values of humanity and justice as stated in the preamble of the 1945 Constitution.

"Therefore, if Israel wants to establish diplomatic relations with Indonesia, they must first stop colonizing Palestinian land and grant full independence to the Palestinian people," Anwar told Tempo on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

Additionally, Anwar warned Israel of its accountability for the genocide it unleashed on Palestinian people.

President Prabowo Subianto previously stated that the Indonesian government will recognize Israel if Palestine is acknowledged as a sovereign state.

The statement was made by Prabowo during a joint statement with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, May 28. Prabowo said Palestinian independence is only viable through a two-state solution.

"Indonesia has stated that once Israel recognizes Palestine, Indonesia is ready to recognize Israel and open the diplomatic relationship," said Prabowo.

Prabowo also mentioned that Indonesia will guarantee Israel's standing as a sovereign state and ensure its security. In fact, according to Prabowo, Indonesia is ready to send peacekeeping forces to the Palestine-Israel border.

President Emmanuel Macron said he's looking to push for Palestinian independence during the high-level conference in New York, United States, in the upcoming June.

During the summit, Macron stated that France and Saudi Arabia will provide a renewed push for a mutual recognition of both Palestine as well as Israel and its "right to live in peace and security" in the Middle East.

"We are also committed to restarting the two-state solution process, mutual recognition, and lasting peace," said Macron in a joint statement with President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

Macron mentioned that this step aligns with Indonesia's stance that the only path to peace is a long-term political solution.
