Multiple Earthquakes Strike Eastern Indonesia Over the Weekend, BMKG Reports

3 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 6.9 magnitude earthquake in the Banda Sea was recorded on Monday afternoon, July 14, 2025. According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the intermediate tremor was caused by intraplate deformation, and was felt the strongest at the IV-V MMI scale.

At that scale, vibrations were felt by nearly all residents and caused doors and windows to rattle. However, BMKG notes that the intraplate earthquakes could trigger stronger tremor effects.

Based on BMKG data, all the recent felt earthquakes occurred entirely in the Eastern part of Indonesia. It started last Saturday afternoon, July 12, 2025, when a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck North Halmahera, North Maluku. Its epicenter was 35 kilometers northwest of East Halmahera with a 4.4-kilometer depth.

Then, the following Sunday, the only felt earthquake throughout the day, which was recorded by BMKG, occurred in Amalatu, Western Seram, Maluku. With a weaker magnitude at 2.9, the tremor was felt at III MMI, similar to the one in Halmahera. The tremor could be felt clearly inside homes, akin to a truck passing by.

The earthquake epicenter was located 14 kilometers west of Elpaputih, Western Seram. It had a depth of 13 kilometers.

BMKG has recorded four felt tremors today, all occurring in Eastern Indonesia.

Aside from the magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Saumlaki, Tanimbar Islands, Maluku, the other three earthquakes struck Enarotali, Paniai, Central Papua (magnitude 4.0) at 01:42 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB); another earthquake in Amalatu (magnitude 2.6) at 10:49 a.m. WIB; and in North Ternate, Ternate, North Maluku (magnitude 5.1) at 12:39 p.m. WIB.

The ground earthquake in Enatorali was felt at III MMI scale, while the one in Amalatu recorded II MMI, or could only be felt by some people inside a house. The offshore North Ternate earthquake could be felt at a II-III MMI scale.
