Nadiem Makarim to Appeal Chromebook Graft Verdict

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Indonesian Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology and Gojek founder Nadiem Makarim is set to appeal his 10-year prison sentence. Nadiem was found guilty of corruption involving Chromebook and Chrome Device Management procurements.

Through his appeal, Nadiem said, he will continue to fight for the truth, for the young generation, for professionals, and for all honest people who have been criminalized.

"I will not stop. I ask for your prayers, support, your voice, and courage," Nadiem told reporters after the decision hearing at the Corruption Court in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

According to the former minister who served from 2019 to 2024, he had fought to unveil the full truth about his and his team's work while serving in the education ministry.

However, the efforts were fruitless since he was still found guilty and effectively sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison.

This is because he claimed that he did not have the Rp809.59 billion (approximately US$50 million) to pay the additional fine included in his sentence.

"They know that. From my wealth report at the end of my term, I didn't have that much money in any form. Meaning, I'm being sentenced to 15 years," he said.

Nadiem also emphasized that the Rp809.59 billion he was accused of never touched his account, and documents and witnesses have proven that the funds never left the GoTo account of PT Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa (PT AKAB).

Furthermore, the cash also belonged to PT AKAB and had no connection whatsoever to Google or the Chromebook case.

"Imagine that. I'm forced to shoulder the burden of repaying that," Nadiem said.

Nadiem was found guilty in the alleged corruption case involving the digitalization of the education program through Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) procurements within the education ministry from 2019 to 2022. 

The former minister was sentenced to 10 years in prison and a Rp1 billion fine, or 190 days in prison, and restitution of Rp809.59 billion, or 5 years in prison.

Nadiem was ordered to pay the restitution after being found guilty of receiving Rp809.59 billion from PT Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa (PT AKAB) through PT Gojek Indonesia.

It was stated that the majority of PT AKAB's funds came from a US$786.99 million investment from Google.

In this case, Nadiem was found guilty of abuse of authority, which caused Rp1.56 trillion in state losses.

The alleged corruption involved, among other things, the procurement of information and communication technology-based learning facilities, including Chromebook laptops and CDMs, for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 fiscal years, in violation of procurement planning and principles.

Nadiem Makarim allegedly carried out his crime in collaboration with three other defendants who were convicted in separate trials: Ibrahim Arief, Mulyatsyah, and Sri Wahyuningsih; and Jurist Tan, who remains a fugitive. 

Nadiem was found guilty of violating Article 3 in conjunction with Article 18 of the Corruption Law Number 31 of 1999, as amended and supplemented by Law Number 20 of 2001, in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) point 1 of the Criminal Code.
