TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The death toll from the flash floods in Nepal has risen to 1,204, according to Xinhua news agency, citing Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026, as cited by Antara.

Previously, the Kathmandu Post newspaper had reported 1,127 fatalities from the disaster.

Disaster authorities stated on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, that 330 foreign nationals were rescued following the floods.

Flash floods swept through northern Nepal on the morning of Wednesday, August 26, after a massive surge of water from China struck the Bhote Koshi River.

The flooding occurred after a glacier receded, triggering a landslide.

A Warning

The devastating flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-China border should serve as a warning to other Himalayan countries, especially regarding the construction of large dams in disaster-prone mountainous areas.

“Such a disaster is inevitably coming always in the dynamic glacial and seismically active environment of the high Himalayas and the Karakorams,” Daanish Mustafa, professor of critical geography at King’s College London, as quoted by Anadolu.

Mustafa issued the warning as search operations for nearly 4,500 missing people were still underway. The death toll from the August 26 disaster reached 1,130 on Wednesday, a week after flash floods and landslides struck the border between the two countries.
