Sony Sets Indian Epic 'Ramayana' For November 6 Release

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The epic story of the Ramayana is heading to theaters this fall, with Sony Pictures setting a Nov. 6 release date for filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari’s highly anticipated adaptation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony holds the film’s global distribution rights outside India, where producer Prime Focus Studios will handle the release. The film is also expected to be released in multiple languages for audiences in different markets around the world.

‘Ramayana’ Sets November Release

The Ramayana is one of the world’s oldest epic stories, following Prince Rama during his years of exile and the journey that unfolds after his wife, Sita, is abducted by the demon king Ravana.

Tiwari, known for films including Dangal and Chhichhore, directs the adaptation, which stars Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Yash and Sai Pallavi.

The project brings together a high-profile international creative team. Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman are providing the music, while Terry Notary and Guy Norris are handling action choreography. Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal serve as production designers.

Prime Focus Studios founder Namit Malhotra is producing the film. Malhotra is also the founder of visual effects company DNEG, whose credits include Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Interstellar and Tenet.

“For generations, the Ramayana has inspired people through its timeless humanity and enduring values. Our ambition has always been to honor that legacy while creating a cinematic experience worthy of audiences everywhere,” Malhotra said in July when Sony’s distribution deal was announced.

Sony Takes ‘Ramayana’ Global

Sony’s involvement gives the Indian epic a broad international theatrical platform, with the film planned for release in multiple languages tailored to local audiences.

The global release comes as Indian cinema continues to expand its international reach, while Hollywood has also demonstrated the box-office potential of large-scale adaptations of classic epics.

Ramayana will arrive in theaters months after Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, another major cinematic adaptation of an ancient epic. Nolan’s film has surpassed $1.55 billion at the global box office, according to the report.

With a November release, Tiwari’s Ramayana will now look to bring one of India’s most enduring stories to a worldwide theatrical audience.
