No Tax Amnesty Unless Ordered by Prabowo, Minister Purbaya Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - To protect tax officers from potential transactional loopholes, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has pledged to forgo tax amnesty programs as long as he's still serving as minister.

"Unless there is a direct order from Bapak President," he said on Tuesday, May 12, referring to Prabowo Subianto.

Purbaya said tax officers must be able to work calmly and focus on implementing existing policies with discipline and integrity.

The minister also mentioned that the tax amnesty program will only be implemented if there is a direct order from President Prabowo.

Previously, there were rumors that the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT) would pursue tax amnesty program participants who had not reported their wealth. Purbaya stated that he would reprimand the DGT for the announcement.

According to the State Treasurer, the DGT has repeatedly announced policies that have caused public uproar. "There is toll tax, this tax, that tax. So, in the future, only I can announce tax policies, not the Director General of Taxes to eliminate confusion," he said.

Tax amnesty is outlined in Law number 7 of 2021 concerning the Harmonization of Tax Provisions (UU HPP). The program has been implemented twice, first in 2016-2017, and again in 2022.

Since Purbaya has been appointed as minister, he has repeatedly stated that he will not continue the tax amnesty program. The statement was previously revealed on September 19, 2025. "If there are repeated amnesties, it signals to taxpayers that they can violate the rules since there will be another amnesty program," he said at that time.
