TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Narcotics Investigation Directorate of the West Java Regional Police has uncovered a hidden laboratory in Meruya Selatan, West Jakarta, suspected of producing methamphetamine.
Authorities believe the lab was operated by an international drug syndicate known as the Golden Crescent.
"This network is known as a drug syndicate from the Middle East and South Asia, including Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan," said Deputy Chief of the West Java Regional Police, Brigadier General Adi Vivid Agustiadi Bachtiar, in a press release on Friday, July 11, 2025.
According to the Head of Public Relations of the West Java Regional Police, Grand Commissioner Hendra Rochmawan, the lab was operating inside a rented house on Jalan Swakarya in Meruya Selatan, West Jakarta. The facility was used to produce methamphetamine, also known locally as sabu.
Hendra explained that the investigation began with a probe into a foreign national believed to be involved in a drug distribution network. This led police to the laboratory in Meruya, which they discovered on July 5, 2025. A raid was conducted three days later.
"Two suspects with the initials MT and RA were arrested at the location. MT is an Iranian national, while RA is an Indonesian citizen," he said.
Police seized various items at the scene, including chemical liquids, digital scales, plastic clips, and laboratory tools.
The two suspects have been charged under Article 114 paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 132 paragraph (1), subsidiary Article 113 paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 132 paragraph (1), and further subsidiary Article 112 paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 132 paragraph (1) of Law No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics.
They face the possibility of the death penalty, life imprisonment, or a maximum fine of Rp10 billion.
