TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced that Indonesia will recognize Israel, but only if Israel first recognizes the independence and sovereignty of Palestine. He made this statement during his speech at the High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Issue and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Monday, September 22, 2025.
Prabowo sees this international meeting as a critical moment to take historical responsibility for the future of Palestine, Israel, and the credibility of the UN. He emphasized the importance of recognizing Palestinian sovereignty.
"Indonesia also declares that after Israel recognizes the independence and statehood of Palestine, Indonesia will immediately recognize the state of Israel," Prabowo said.
He added that Indonesia would also support all guarantees for Israel's security.
He further stressed that a two-state solution is the only path to peace. "Indonesia once again reaffirms its commitment to the two-state solution in the Palestinian issue," he stated.
Prabowo believes that recognizing the state of Palestine is the right step and aligns with the right side of history. He urged other nations to collectively address the conflict.
In his concluding remarks, President Prabowo called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a lasting peace. "We need that peace now. Immediate peace. We need to achieve peace," he declared.
Prabowo made a similar statement during a visit from French President Emmanuel Macron on May 28, reiterating Indonesia's willingness to recognize Israel upon its recognition of a sovereign Palestine.
At the time, in front of Macron, Prabowo also commended France for its support of Palestinian independence. "France will also continue to press for the immediate cessation of armed activities in Gaza," he remarked.
The President has also previously expressed Indonesia's full support for the high-level conference (HLC), which was planned by France and Saudi Arabia to promote a two-state solution and lasting peace in the Middle East. The HLC was ultimately held this month.
The High-Level Conference on Palestine was part of the 80th UN General Assembly session. The event was initiated by France and Saudi Arabia, represented by President Emmanuel Macron and Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud. The first session of the HLC featured speeches from President Macron, the Saudi Foreign Minister, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
President Prabowo Subianto spoke during the second session, which included speeches from 33 delegation leaders representing various countries and regional blocs like the European Union and the Arab League. King Abdullah II of Jordan was the first to speak, followed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. President Prabowo was the fifth speaker.
