TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto underscored the critical need for an independent Palestine in a powerful address at the International High-Level Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestine Issue. He began his speech by drawing attention to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
The Chief Patron of the Gerindra Party condemned the violence against innocent civilians. "We must recognize Palestine now. We must stop the humanitarian disaster in Gaza," Prabowo said at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Monday, September 22, 2025.
The president stated that recognizing the state of Palestine is the right and historic course of action. He urged other nations to act together to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
He also reiterated Indonesia's steadfast support for a two-state solution to the conflict. "Only this two-state solution will bring peace," he affirmed, adding that the international community must guarantee Palestine's statehood.
However, he also emphasized a significant condition: once Israel acknowledges the independence and statehood of Palestine, Indonesia will in turn recognize the state of Israel. "We will support all security guarantees for Israel," Prabowo declared.
The high-level conference was held as part of the 80th UN General Assembly at the UN Headquarters. The event was initiated by France and Saudi Arabia, represented by President Emmanuel Macron and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, respectively. The first session featured speeches from President Macron, the Saudi Foreign Minister, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
The second session included concise speeches from 33 delegation leaders representing various countries and blocs, including the European Union and the Arab League. President Prabowo was the fifth speaker, following King Abdullah II of Jordan, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil, and President Marcelo Nuno Duarte Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal.
