Prabowo Expresses Condolences Over Death of Ojol Driver Run Over by Brimob Vehicle

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has issued an apology for the tragic death of a motorcycle taxi driver who was crushed by a police mobile brigade or Brimob vehicle during a demonstration in Jakarta on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

Prabowo expressed his condolences and sympathy for the incident. He also pledged to ensure the well-being of the victim's family, stating, "We will also pay special attention to their parents and siblings," the Head of State said in a YouTube video from the Presidential Secretariat on Friday, August 29, 2025.

Prabowo Vows Transparency After Police Vehicle Kills Protester

In the video, Prabowo conveyed his shock and disappointment regarding the police officers' actions. He has since ordered a thorough and transparent investigation into the case. "It must be transparent," he said. 

The President also demanded that the officers involved take responsibility, promising strict legal action if any violations are found. The Chair of the Gerindra Party called on the public to remain calm and promised to take note of their complaints.

The motorcycle taxi driver, Affan Kurniawan, died after being crushed by a Brimob armored vehicle belonging to the Jakarta Metropolitan Police's Brimob. The incident occurred as police were dispersing demonstrators on Thursday, August 28, 2025, in the area of the Bendungan Hilir II Flats, Central Jakarta.

National Police Chief Offers Apology

The Chief of the National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, also apologized for the incident. He mentioned that this tragedy will lead to an evaluation of police conduct during future operations.

"We will follow up on the incident. I apologize to the victims' families and the entire online motorcycle taxi community for the tragedy that occurred," Sigit said in front of the mortuary at the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in the early hours of Friday.
