Prabowo Warns Indonesian Police Not to 'Burden' Citizens

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto discouraged members of the Indonesian national police (Polri) from being a burden to the citizens. This message was delivered during the commemoration of the Polri anniversary, or Bhayangkara Day, on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

In his address, Prabowo asked the police force to "come when the people need you, listen to them, serve them, and protect them."

"Don't burden the citizens," said Prabowo in Cikeas, Bogor, West Java, on Wednesday morning.

Subsequently, Prabowo warned that the police, as an institution, are paid by the people, down to the equipment. "Therefore, we must truly guard and protect our people," said the former Defense Minister during President Joko Widodo's administration.

Prabowo also underscored the importance of maintaining public trust as the protector, guard, and servant of the Indonesian people. 

During the occasion, Prabowo urged the police to acknowledge people's suffering, as the institution was also born from the fight for the country's independence. According to the president, the police force has been actively involved in the fight for independence since its inception.

This, he continued, is what defines Polri's closeness to the citizens. "That is why the Indonesian National Police must be present amidst the people and defend them and feel the suffering of the people," said Prabowo.

The Indonesian police held an 80th-anniversary ceremony at the Mobile Brigade Corps Training Unit complex, Cikeas, Bogor, this morning. The event was enlivened with various displays and parades, such as the tactical vehicle convoy, parachuting, and parades of troops from various police units, the military, and police partners.
