TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday called on Hamas to hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority (PA).
During his meeting with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in Amman, the capital of Jordan, Abbas stated that Hamas "will not rule the Gaza Strip" in the post-war era, as reported by the official Palestinian news agency, WAFA, as quoted by Antara.
Abbas stressed that the only viable solution for the Gaza Strip is the complete withdrawal of Israel from the enclave and the empowerment of the Palestinian state to assume its responsibilities with the support of Arab countries and the international community.
WAFA stated that the meeting discussed the latest developments in the Palestinian territories, as well as political and humanitarian developments related to the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.
Abbas emphasized the need to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible, release all hostages and prisoners, and ensure the unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.
During the meeting, Abbas condemned Israel's unilateral actions, including the expansion of settlements in the West Bank and Jerusalem, and rejected any attempts to annex Palestinian territories and repeated attacks on holy sites of Islam and Christianity.
Additionally, he called for the initiation of a political process to achieve a two-state solution based on international legitimate resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative, proposing the organization of an international peace conference in New York to achieve this goal.
