TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, admitted to studying a prototype of non-dormitory integrated schools to be adopted in integrated schools established by President Prabowo Subianto.
Mu'ti stated that one of the integrated schools he visited was a school built by the City Government of Samarinda, East Kalimantan. "They use the Cambridge curriculum, and I think all the equipment is ideal, just like what the President has done," he said when met at the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in Jakarta on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
However, Mu'ti mentioned that the government has not yet decided on a plan for integrated schools and is open to all possibilities. These possibilities include utilizing existing vacant schools and collaborating with local governments, such as with the People's Schools.
According to Mu'ti, the President has not given an official instruction to commence the opening of these integrated schools. Therefore, he said, the Ministry of Education chooses to focus on designing the curriculum and the teacher recruitment scheme for the future integrated schools. "Technical issues will be addressed later," he stated.
Previously, President Prabowo Subianto announced plans to build 7,000 integrated schools in every district in Indonesia beginning in 2026. Prabowo will establish a special task force to develop this program.
"This is being designed at the moment. I have asked for the Ministry of Research and Technology... maybe with the assistance of other ministries, to form a special task force," the President said during a full cabinet meeting at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday, October 20, 2025, as reported by Antara.
Prabowo explained that building integrated schools is the government's effort to equalize education and improve the quality of human resources. The concept is that integrated schools will unite the levels of elementary, junior high, and senior high school or vocational high school within one integrated educational area.
Integrated schools are intended for children from underprivileged families who fall into deciles 3 through 5. "This means that we might have to build these 7,000 integrated schools," stated the President.
Integrated schools are the third educational concept designed by Prabowo since being inaugurated as President on October 20, 2024. The other two schools are the Garuda School and the People's School.
The Garuda School is dedicated to children with above-average achievements and intelligence, managed by the Ministry of Research and Technology. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Social Affairs manages the people's schools, which are intended for children from poor families in deciles 1 and 2 of the Single Data of National Socio-Economic.
