Robert Downey Jr. Joins Disney Adventure as Ship Godparent

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - American actor Robert Downey Jr. has been appointed by Disney as the godparent for the Disney Adventure ship, which will embark on its maiden voyage in March 2026 from the port of Singapore.

"Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea, and we are honoured that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure," said Josh D'Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences and the future Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company in a statement released in Jakarta in mid-February 2026.

The Best Supporting Actor winner at the 2024 Academy Awards is considered the foundation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for his role as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.

His cinematic journey as this iconic character over a decade culminated in Avengers: Endgame, which grossed over $2.79 billion worldwide. Downey was officially inducted as a Disney Legend in 2019 and will now appear as Doctor Doom in the Marvel Studios film Avengers: Doomsday, to be released in theaters on December 18.

In response, Robert Downey Jr. expressed that the opportunity given by Disney is a great honor for him. "It’s impossible to describe the majesty of Adventure, and to be its godparent is an honour. As the largest ship in the Disney fleet, a gargantuan blessing must be bestowed… I’ll do my darndest," he said.

Disney Adventure brings more than 100 years of Disney storytelling into seven themed areas, including several Marvel experiences. In the Marvel Landing on the upper deck, guests can experience Superhero adventures through Tony Stark's Ironcycle Test Run, the first roller coaster on a Disney Cruise Line ship and the longest at sea of its kind.

In the open-air Disney Imagination Garden, the live stage show "Avengers Assemble!" will feature spectacular stunt action and special effects in a full-action battle between Marvel Superheroes and Villains.

Within Disney's Oceaneer Club, the Marvel WEB Workshop invites young recruits to try out new Superhero costume prototypes and undergo training simulations using secret Avengers technology.

This new ship also offers Disney's signature entertainment and services: character meet-and-greets, Broadway-style shows, themed concierge rooms and accommodations, and over 20 dining venues and lounges with world-class international cuisine and Asian-inspired menus.

The maritime tradition of appointing a godparent to bless a new ship is a centuries-old custom believed to bring luck before its maiden voyage.
