TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 17th edition of the Singapore Night Festival (SNF) launched on Friday, August 21, 2026, bringing dozens of free outdoor installations, facade light projections, and live performances to the heart of the city. The nighttime celebration brings together regional creative talent to re-imagine Southeast Asian folklore and history across a series of night-time displays.
As reported by The Straits Times, this year's event centers on the theme "Myths and Legends," transforming historic streets, museum facades, and alleyways through dozens of light installations, performances, and projection-mapping displays. Festival director Qazim Karim noted that the theme was inspired by the layered history of Fort Canning, historically known as Bukit Larangan.
"There are so many layers of history to unpack, which inspired me to explore the stories behind its different myths and legends," Karim said. The multi-week event features cross-border artistic collaborations that bring traditional Southeast Asian narratives into contemporary urban spaces, with the vast majority of activities offered free to the public.

The festival's crown jewel is "Tales of Earth and Sea," projected onto the National Museum of Singapore. Developed by Indonesian multimedia collective The Fox, The Folks, it features a custom soundtrack by Singapore's Artusik and Malaysia’s Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).
"It became a three-country collaboration, which I think is a wonderful spirit to bring to the festival," creative director Fadjar Kurnia told The Straits Times. Additionally, the inaugural MALAM Projection Mapping Competition at The Cathay showcases top digital art talents from across Southeast Asia.
2. Roving Street Theater
Dutch group Close-Act Theatre makes its Southeast Asian debut with "Birdmen," featuring giant, illuminated puppets operated by stilt-walkers roaming between the National Museum of Singapore, Waterloo Street, and surrounding campus areas.
3. Immersive Light Installations
Bugis Street Art Lane hosts "Stormy Straits," featuring luminous scaffolding and cloud-like structures evoking the voyages of historic Bugis seafarers. Nearby at Funan, the speech-activated "Rising of Sister Islands" kinetic wall responds when visitors call out the names of folklore figures.
