Singapore to Recruit 1,000 New Teachers Every Year

2 weeks ago 17

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Singapore is set to recruit 1,000 new teachers every year for the next few years, according to an announcement by Singapore's Education Minister Desmond Lee on Wednesday, as reported by Antara and CNA.

The announcement shows an increase from the previous intake of around 700 teachers annually.

This includes recruitment to anticipate a growing number of retirements in the coming years as the teaching workforce ages, in line with national trends, he said in his statement.

Speaking at the annual National Institute of Education Teacher's Day Awards Presentation at Nanyang Technological University, Lee said that while Singapore has built a committed and high-quality teaching workforce over the years, the education system must continue to adapt to the changing times.

He mentioned that rapidly emerging trends such as artificial intelligence (AI), climate change, and social media significantly alter the way young people communicate. The education system must do more than just keep pace with these changes, Lee said.

"As a teacher, you are preparing the next generation to focus on the importance of sustainability and climate change," he said.

"Social media and digital platforms have changed the way young people communicate, form relationships, and express their views and beliefs. As a teacher, you shape and guide their early practices and habits."

According to the ministry's data, the number of teachers in Singapore has decreased from 33,378 in 2016 to 30,396 in 2023 due to a slowdown in recruitment.
