Today's Weather Forecast: Cloudy Skies, Light Rain Expected Across Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of potential light, moderate, and heavy rain, possibly accompanied by lightning and strong winds, in several Indonesian cities on Saturday, August 1.

As reported by ANTARA, BMKG forecaster Afif Shalahuddin explained that in general the convergence area extends across the Malacca Strait, the west coast of North Sumatra, the west coast of West Sumatra, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Maluku, Central Papua, and the Papua Mountains.

These conditions can increase the potential for rain cloud growth in areas affected by convergence or confluence. Therefore, Tanjung Selor and other big cities will potentially experience moderate to very heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

Meanwhile, several other major cities will experience light to moderate rain, namely Banda Aceh, Medan, Tanjung Pinang, Padang, Bengkulu, Serang, Bandung, Semarang, Pontianak, Mamuju, Ambon, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayapura and Merauke.

Today, cloudy skies are expected in the following major cities: Pekanbaru, Jambi, Pangkal Pinang, Palembang, Bengkulu, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Banjarmasin, Palangkaraya, Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Kendari, Palu, Gorontalo, Manado, Ternate, and Sorong.

Previously, BMKG urged hydroelectric power plant (PLTA) operators across Indonesia to plan water usage carefully in anticipation of an increase in electricity demand during the El Niño phenomenon.

BMKG Deputy for Climatology Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan said at a press conference in Jakarta that spikes in national energy consumption often coincide with declines in reservoir water levels during hot weather and droughts.

"Information on rainfall is crucial for determining water use plans for hydroelectric power plants. Hot weather typically triggers a surge in energy consumption, so this climate information is crucial for determining anticipatory measures," Ardhasena said.
