Two Offshore Earthquakes Shook West Java Over the Weekend

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Until Monday morning, July 20, 2026, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 from the Indonesian Ocean south of West Java, which occurred on Sunday at 15:11 WIB (Western Indonesian Time), became the latest earthquake that could be felt. According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake from the south sea was felt as far as the Bogor area.

According to the Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at BMKG, Wijayanto, based on BMKG's estimated map of shaking levels, the earthquake vibrations were felt at intensity scale III MM in Cikotok, Kalapanunggal, Cidolog, Cisaat, Simpenan, Sukabumi City, Nagrak, Panggarangan, Cimahi, Banjaran, Lembang, Parompong, Cililin, Sariwangi, Katapang, Bandung, Cianjur, Ciwidey, Ciawi, Cikole, and Pelabuhan Ratu.

At that scale, the shaking was felt inside the house as if a truck was passing by. Meanwhile, the shaking that reached the Soreang, Ciracap, and Bogor areas was felt at intensity scale II MMI, or vibrations were only felt by a few people and only caused light hanging objects to sway.

Based on BMKG's analysis, the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the sea, 79 kilometers southwest of Sukabumi Regency, West Java. Since the beginning of detection, BMKG modeling showed that this earthquake was not tsunamic. "The earthquake is classified as shallow due to rock deformation activity at the bottom of the sea," said Wijayanto.

Prior to this, on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 19:47 WIB, the Sukabumi City region in West Java and its surrounding areas were also struck by a tectonic earthquake. According to BMKG's updated data, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.3. "The earthquake epicenter was located in the sea, 82 kilometers southeast of Sukabumi City at a depth of 22 kilometers," said the Head of BMKG II Tangerang Region, Hartanto, after the earthquake.

He mentioned that the tremor was classified as shallow with the triggering activity of underwater active faults. Based on reports from the community, this earthquake was felt in the Sukabumi Regency, Cianjur Regency at intensity scale III MMI. While in Bandung Regency, West Bandung Regency, Garut, Tasikmalaya Regency, at scale II - III MMI.
