TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Wahyu Safriansyah, a doctoral student in chemistry at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad), obtained his doctoral degree at the age of 25 years and 10 months.
Wahyu defended his dissertation entitled Terpenoids and Steroids from the Bark of Aglaia pachyphylla and Their Cytotoxic and Anti-inflammatory Activities. His doctoral defense took place on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
Wahyu conducted the search for new compound candidates, both from the terpenoid and steroid groups, which are expected to become new candidates with anticancer or anti-inflammatory activities. "Especially against breast cancer," he said as quoted from Unpad's website on Monday, July 14, 2025.
During his research, Wahyu isolated 28 compounds from the bark of Aglaia pachyphylla. Six of them are new compounds belonging to the terpenoid and steroid groups. During his doctoral studies at Unpad, Wahyu also participated in research programs at Sultan Idris University of Education, Malaysia, and Osaka University, Japan. "Because in Indonesia, instruments related to my research are still quite limited, it is necessary to collaborate with various parties," he said.
He hopes that the quality of research infrastructure in Indonesia can improve and be more evenly distributed, so that future researchers can conduct research within the country. Wahyu completed his studies with the support of the Master's Degree to Doctoral Education for Outstanding Bachelor Scholarship (PMDSU). The scholarship program was his choice because he wanted to continue his research.
Prior to this, he had published 17 scientific papers in reputable journals. Some of the published research titles include Phytochemistry and Biological Activities of Guarea Genus (Meliaceae), as well as Sesquiterpenoids from the stem bark of Aglaia pachyphylla Miq (Meliaceae) and cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 Cancer Cell Line. His other researches include The isolation of novel pregnane steroids from Aglaia pachyphylla Miq. and the cytotoxicity against breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7), and Pachyphyllanone, a new cycloartane triterpenoid isolated from Aglaia pachyphylla and its cytotoxic activity.
