US, Egypt, and More Extend Independence Day Greetings to Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of countries have extended congratulations on the 81st anniversary of Indonesia's Independence Day on Monday, August 17, 2026. This year's theme is "Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia" (Indonesia Berdaulat, Adil, and Makmur).

Here are some of them, as quoted from Antara:

United States

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended his congratulations to Indonesia, as shared by the US Embassy in Jakarta. 

Rubio emphasized the two countries' enduring partnership, rooted in a commitment to democratic governance and a shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

The US also extended "deepest condolences" over the earthquake that struck the NTT region just a couple days prior.

Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his congratulations to President Prabowo Subianto, shared by the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

"Your country has attained universally recognized achievements in the economic and social spheres and enjoys well-deserved respect on the global stage," said Putin in the message.

Uni Arab Emirates

UAE leaders sent congratulatory messages on Indonesia's Independence Day addressed to President Prabowo on Monday, according to the country's Foreign Ministry. This includes President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, VP and PM Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, as well as Deputy PM and Presidential Court chair Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Pakistan

Pakistani Asif Ali Zardari extended "felicitations" to Prabowo and the people of Indonesia on the country's Independence Day in a post on X.

The president also underscored both countries' "close and friendly relations" while wishing for "continued peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of Indonesia."

Egypt

Egyptian Ambassador to Indonesia, Yasser Hassan Faraq Elshemy, sent his congratulations on behalf of the people and the government of Egypt via his Instagram account @embassyofegypt.jakarta.

"Egypt is very proud of the historical ties between our two nations and its status as the first country to recognize Indonesia's independence," said Elshemy.

Egypt first recognized Indonesia's independence de facto on March 22, 1946, and then de jure on June 10, 1947.

Germany

The German Ambassador to Indonesia, Ralf Beste, through his Instagram account @germanembassyjkt, highlighted the 74-year relationship between the two countries, built on mutual respect, trust, and prosperity.

"We value this friendship and are confident that this cooperation will continue to grow for the betterment and prosperity of both nations," Beste said.

Poland

Meanwhile, the Polish Ambassador to Indonesia, Barbara Szymanowska, via her Instagram account @dubes_polandia, also congratulated the Indonesian government and people and encouraged them to celebrate Indonesia's historical achievements and hopeful future.

Szymanowska also expressed her hope that the friendship and cooperation between Indonesia and Poland would grow stronger and bring benefits to both parties.

Switzerland

The Swiss Ambassador to Indonesia, Konstantin Obolensky, via his Instagram account @swissinindonesia, stated that although he had only recently arrived in Indonesia, he had already felt the warmth and spirit of Indonesia and that it was an honor to be able to celebrate 81 years of Indonesian independence.

Obolensky also stated that this year marks 75 years of partnership between Indonesia and Switzerland, which he described as an extraordinary and proud journey. He expressed his hope that the partnership between the two countries would continue and grow in the future.
