TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesia's Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, reported that the trade talks between Indonesia and the United States on US-imposed tariffs had entered the technical discussion phase, with both sides agreeing to form five working groups.

Overall, the US government appreciated Indonesia's proposed strategies, approaches, and proposals. "Both parties agreed to a more intensive process at the technical level,” said Airlangga during a virtual press conference on Friday, April 25, 2025. “We have five specific sectors for working groups to expedite discussions."

Airlangga, accompanied by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, reported the negotiation progress directly from Washington D.C on Thursday, April 24, 2025, US time, or April 25, 2025, Indonesian time. The technical discussion between the Indonesian and US teams will take place over the next two weeks.

Indonesia also signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with the US Trade Representative (USTR) office. "Meaning, we have entered the phase of negotiation,” he said, adding that Indonesia is one of 20 countries that have kickstarted the early negotiation process with the US.

Airlangga outlined that Indonesia also proposed to the US opportunities to forge fair cooperation for the sake of national interests. These proposals aim to provide at least five benefits, including: First, to accommodate and maintain national energy resilience.

Next, to advocate for Indonesian market access to the United States, especially with competitive tariff policies for Indonesian exports. Third, deregulation to improve ease of doing business, trade, and investment, which will create job opportunities.

Fourth, to obtain added value through cooperation in supply chains or strategic industrial supply chains and critical minerals. Lastly, access to knowledge and technology in various sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, and renewable energy.

The Indonesian government also gathered input from several US business associations, such as the Semiconductor Industry Association, US-ASEAN Business Council, United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO), and corporations such as Amazon, Boeing, Microsoft, and Google.

"All of these stakeholders support Indonesia's efforts to achieve justice," said Airlangga.
