Warning Lights Flash Across Indonesia's Economy

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – As Indonesia enters the second half of 2026, the economy appears outwardly calm. Beneath that veneer, however, a growing number of financial and real-sector indicators released over the past month have begun flashing warning signals that deserve far closer attention.

The clearest alarm has come from the rupiah, which weakened steadily to nearly Rp18,100 against the United States dollar by the end of last week. That slide is particularly striking because Bank Indonesia (BI) has already embarked on one of its most aggressive monetary tightening cycles in recent years.

Within little more than a month, the central bank has raised its benchmark policy rate from 4.75 percent to 5.75 percent. One of those increases was delivered at an unscheduled meeting of the Board of Governors—an exceptionally rare move that underscored the authorities’ sense of urgency.

Yet the aggressive tightening has failed to reverse the currency’s downward trajectory. A cumulative increase of one percentage point in such a short period would normally be expected to stabilize the exchange rate, or at least slow its decline. The fact that the rupiah continues to weaken suggests that the problem extends well beyond monetary policy. Investors remain concerned about unresolved structural issues, ranging from mounting fiscal pressures to an increasingly volatile global geopolitical environment.
