TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) urged the public to remain vigilant regarding the potential for extreme weather—specifically thunderstorms—in parts of western Indonesia on Friday.

"For the western part of Indonesia, there is a potential for thunderstorms in Padang, moderate rain in Medan, and light rain in Banda Aceh, Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Jambi, Bengkulu, Bandung, and Tanjung Selor," said BMKG forecaster Henokhvita during a weather forecast broadcast in Jakarta on Friday, as quoted by ANTARA.

Despite the warnings of rain, the BMKG forecasts cloudy weather conditions for most other cities in western Indonesia. Henokhvita stated that cloudy and heavily overcast conditions are likely to cover the skies over Pangkal Pinang, Serang, Semarang, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya.

In addition to cloud cover and rainfall, the BMKG forecasts hazy conditions, as well as potential smoke or fog, in Palembang, Bandar Lampung, Jakarta, Pontianak, Samarinda, Palangkaraya, and Banjarmasin.

Regarding monitoring in eastern Indonesia, the BMKG forecasts light rainfall in several areas. "We now turn to eastern Indonesia. Be advised of the potential for light rain in Mamuju, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayapura, and Jayawijaya," he added.

Meanwhile, weather conditions ranging from partly cloudy to overcast are forecast to prevail across other eastern regions, including Denpasar, Kupang, Makassar, Gorontalo, Manado, Ternate, Ambon, Sorong, and Merauke.

In addition to rainfall and cloud cover, the BMKG has noted the potential for hazy conditions in the Palu, Kendari, and Mataram areas.

Enochvita reminded that the forecast is a general description of today's weather. For more complete weather information updated every hour, the public can monitor the BMKG Info application and the @infobmkg social media account.
