5.3M Shallow Earthquake Hits Pakistan After Flash Floods Kill at Least 32

6 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 struck central Pakistan on Sunday, June 29, 2025, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as reported by CNA.

There are no direct reports of casualties or damage caused by the shallow earthquake, which occurred around 3:30 a.m. with an epicenter about 60 kilometers north-northeast of Barkhan, a city in the mountainous Balochistan province, Pakistan, according to the USGS.

Pakistan is located on the border where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, making the country prone to earthquakes. The region can be challenging to navigate during disasters.

In 2015, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Pakistan and Afghanistan killed nearly 400 people in rugged terrain that hindered relief efforts.

The country was also hit by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in 2005, which killed more than 73,000 people and left about 3.5 million homeless, especially in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir.

Balochistan province, the largest province in Pakistan, was struck by an earthquake in 2021 that killed at least 20 people and left more than 10 injured, while landslides hindered early rescue efforts in the remote mountainous district of Harnai.

Just a day before the earthquake, as reported by Aljazeera, Pakistan was also hit by flash floods that killed at least 32 people since the beginning of this week's monsoon season, according to disaster management officials.

Flash floods and roof collapses in the last 36 hours have claimed the lives of 19 people, eight of whom were children, said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial disaster management authority in a statement on Saturday.

Of the total casualties, 13 were reported in the Swat Valley.

Floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also damaged 56 houses, six of which were destroyed, disaster management authorities said.

The national meteorological agency warned that the risk of heavy rains and the possibility of flash floods will remain high at least until Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

Last month, at least 32 people died in severe storms in the South Asian country, which has experienced several extreme weather events in the spring, including heavy hailstorms.

Pakistan is one of the world's most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change, and its 240 million population faces increasingly frequent extreme weather events.
