TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - AirAsia plans to open more new international routes connected to Indonesia after acquiring 70 new aircraft. "We are very excited to open more international routes to and from Indonesia soon," said CEO Capital A and Advisor & Responsible Person of AirAsia Group Tony Fernandes while answering questions from the media in a press conference through Zoom channel, on Friday night, July 4, 2025.

By utilizing the airline's brand and network, Tony is optimistic that they can operate several routes from North Asia, Australia, and the Middle East to the hub being built in Indonesia, including one to Jakarta. In addition to the capital, Tony mentioned several other strategic cities that will become new destinations for AirAsia, namely Bali, Pontianak, Lombok, Labuan Bajo, Balikpapan, and Belitung.

He added that other routes such as Labuan Bajo and Belitung will soon follow. "Lombok is something that we have long believed in (its potential). So yes, this is very exciting for Indonesia," said Tony.

On Friday, July 4, 2025, AirAsia Berhad signed a new fleet purchase agreement worth US$12.25 billion with Airbus. A subsidiary of Capital A Berhad bought 50 A321XLR aircraft with an additional 20-unit option. The signing of this agreement was witnessed directly by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, CEO of Capital A Berhad Tony Fernandes, and CEO of Airbus Commercial Aircraft Christian Scherer.

Tony stated that the company is expanding its fleet to strengthen its flight network and establish intercontinental connections beyond ASEAN. "This is a major step for us to create the world's first low-cost multi-hub airline," said Tony.

For AirAsia, this agreement is a significant step toward achieving our vision of becoming the world's first low-cost network airline, with its reliable multi-hub strategy. "These new aircraft are scheduled to be delivered from 2028 to 2032," said Tony. The latest generation of A321XLR aircraft will complement AirAsia's existing Airbus fleet, which currently consists primarily of A320 and A330 models.
