Bank Indonesia Reveals Gen Z and Millennials Dominate QRIS Use

4 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Malang - Deputy Director of Payment System Policy Department at Bank Indonesia (BI), Himawan Kusprianto, stated that non-cash payment transactions based on the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) are predominantly dominated by Gen Z. This is based on BI data in mid-2025, which shows that the demographic of QRIS users is mainly from the Gen Z group, with a figure of more than 75 million people.

Subsequently, the QRIS user group is followed by the millennial generation, with 69 million people, resulting in a significant increase in transactions. As of June 2025, QRIS transactions have surged by 148 percent compared to the past two years.

In general, BI data shows that the use of non-cash EDC transactions up to mid-2025 has reached 2.3 million units. Meanwhile, the QRIS merchants have reached 38 million, and the number of QRIS users has reached 57 million people across Indonesia.

Furthermore, Himawan stated that the volume of QRIS transactions has reached Rp 6.1 billion, or about 93 percent of the national target of 6.5 billion transactions. Not only the number of transactions, but the transaction value and the number of merchants also continue to show an increasing trend.

"These figures are evidence that the implementation of QRIS to facilitate digital payments in Indonesia has been beneficially accepted by the people in Indonesia," said Himawan in Malang, last Friday, July 18, 2025, as quoted from Antara.

This statement was made by Himawan during the Capacity Building and Media Gathering event by Bank Indonesia East Java. At that time, he also mentioned that the majority, or 93 percent, of non-cash payments based on QRIS are used by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

As for the sectors that dominate the use of QRIS, MSMEs account for 57.52 percent, small businesses for 29.59 percent, and medium businesses for 5.89 percent, while large businesses account for 3.37 percent.

Himawan explained that the number of QRIS users continues to show significant growth in Indonesia. Furthermore, based on BI data, it is recorded that in terms of demographics, Gen Z is the age group with the most users, reaching 27.94 percent of the total users nationwide.

He stated that this indicates that the digitization of the payment system is increasingly accepted by the community, especially by the younger generation and the MSME sector. Therefore, BI will continue to expand non-cash payment facilities through QRIS.

"The development of QRIS has been rapid since the pandemic until now, compared to other non-cash payments such as the use of Electronic Data Capture (EDC)," said Himawan.

Bank Indonesia is now preparing for the launch of QRIS Cross Border, which is a QRIS that can be used for cross-border transactions with Japan and China, allowing the people of Indonesia in these two countries to use QRIS.
