TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The CEO of Indonesian sovereign wealth fund Danantara, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, said over 204 foreign investors are interested in the government's waste-to-energy project. "We have started the tender process, and more than 204 have joined," he said at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs in Jakarta on Friday, October 24, 2025.
Rosan said Danantara expects the selection process for investors to conclude by November 2025, and subsequently hold a bidding. Thus, he expects the tender process to be completed by early 2026.
"Our task is to draw in investors," he said, but Rosan admitted that it wouldn't be a problem if there were no investors involved in this project. "We can still run this program."
The Danantara and ministry-led project aims to process 1,000 tons of waste per day into electricity for 20 thousand households across Indonesia.
Rosan explained that the government has agreed to build waste-to-energy facilities in seven locations, namely Bali, Yogyakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, Semarang, Bekasi, and Medan. These locations are selected after considering the amount of waste and land availability.
He said the construction process will commence in March 2026. The facilities, he said, would be built simultaneously, depending on the readiness.
Rosan said Danantara will be a shareholder in all waste-to-energy projects. "To ensure that the project runs well and smoothly," he said.
Waste-to-energy conversion is not a new process, he said, citing the implementation in other countries, including China, Japan, and Singapore.
In addition to power supply, Rosan hopes this project will gradually reduce the amount of waste accumulated in final disposal sites (TPA). "For example, at Bantar Gebang (TPA), there are currently 55 million tons. We will process that as well. Hopefully, the waste will disappear over time," he said.
