TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reports four additional casualties from the Sumatra disaster, bringing the total death toll to 1,182 as of Friday, January 9, 2026. Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, confirmed that the latest victims were identified as one individual in North Aceh, two in Langkat, and one in Central Tapanuli.
"In the past two days, there has been an increase in the number of deaths: one in North Aceh, two in Langkat, and one in Central Tapanuli. The total number of casualties is now 1,182," he said in a press conference monitored on BNPB's YouTube channel, Friday, January 9, 2026.
BNPB detailed 544 deaths in Aceh, 372 in North Sumatra, and 264 in West Sumatra.
Meanwhile, 145 people remain missing, including 32 in Aceh, 42 in North Sumatra, and 72 in West Sumatra.
Across these three provinces, 238,627 individuals remain displaced. This includes 214,084 people in Aceh, 13,689 in North Sumatra, and 10,854 in West Sumatra.
Abdul noted that 14 areas in Aceh have transitioned from the emergency response phase to the disaster transition phase. However, four areas, namely Central Aceh, Gayo Lues, Aceh Tamiang, and Pidie Jaya, have extended the emergency response phase until January 22, 2026.
"Four areas are still focusing on restoring land access roads and distributing logistics, which are still far from the district command posts," he said.
The extension of the emergency response phase allows rescuers to continue searching for victims. Meanwhile, North Sumatra and West Sumatra have fully entered the emergency transition phase, and formal search operations have been halted. "But the SAR team is on standby. If there is information about the location or if victims are identified, the search will continue," he said.
