BRICS Not Seeking Confrontation Amid Trump's Tariff Threat, China Says

6 hours ago 2

TEMPO.COJakarta - China announced on Monday, July 7, 2025, that the BRICS group, which includes 11 countries like Brazil, Russia, and India, is not pursuing "confrontation." Beijing's statement came after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on nations allied with the bloc.

"Regarding the imposition of tariffs, China has repeatedly stated its position that trade and tariff wars have no winners and protectionism offers no way forward," foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said as reported by CNA.

Trump indicated he would send the first tariff letters to various countries on Monday, just days before his deadline for trading partners to reach an agreement.

He mentioned on Sunday that he would dispatch an initial wave of up to 15 letters, warning that U.S. levies on imports would revert to the high levels he set in April if countries failed to secure a deal.

Additionally, in a post on his Truth Social social media platform, Trump threatened a further 10 percent tariff on countries allied with the BRICS developing nations. He accused them of "anti-Americanism" after they denounced his tariffs at a summit in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

Conceived two decades ago as a forum for rapidly growing economies, BRICS has often been perceived as a China-driven counterbalance to the influence of the U.S. and Western Europe. However, Beijing defended the grouping on Monday as a "crucial platform for cooperation among emerging and developing markets."

"It (BRICS) advocates openness, inclusivity, and win-win cooperation," Mao asserted. "It does not engage in camp confrontation and is not targeted at any country."
