China, US Agree on Plan to Curb Trade Tensions Following Talks in London

1 day ago 6

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States and China have agreed on a trade framework following two days of negotiations in London aimed at easing tensions between the two sides. This was revealed by China's top trade envoy Li Chenggang and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Tuesday night, as reported by Anadolu and Aljazeera on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

“The two sides agreed, in principle, the framework for implementing the consensus of the two heads of state in their firm call on the 5th of June, as well as the consensus of the meeting in Geneva,” Li told journalists in London.

Although the details of the framework announced on Tuesday are not yet clear, this marks a breakthrough a month after Washington and Beijing announced a 90-day suspension to most of their import tariffs following talks in Geneva.

Li explained that the results of the negotiations and the framework reached will be reported directly to the leaders of both countries.

According to Li, the Chinese and US teams have been working "very diligently" and engaged in "very in-depth" discussions over the past few days. He described the communication between the two sides as "very professional, rational, in-depth, and candid."

Li hoped the progress reached will amount to improved trust between the two countries, strengthen stable economic and trade relations, and make a positive contribution to global economic growth.

Meanwhile, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said both parties will try to implement the "Geneva consensus" and have addressed all issues that divide the world's two largest economies.

Lutnick stated that both parties will move forward with the framework while awaiting approval from US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who held a 90-minute telephone discussion on trade last week.

“Once the presidents approve it, we will then seek to implement it,” Lutnick told reporters outside Lancaster House, the venue of the two delegations' negotiations.

Lutnick indicated that US measures taken in response to China's slowing export of rare earth metals, a major issue dividing the two parties, are likely to be relaxed as supplies increase.

A new round of trade talks between China and the United States began in London on Monday, with the aim of reaching a comprehensive agreement.

The main agendas include China's restrictions on the export of rare earth metals to the US, Washington's ban on certain technology exports to Beijing, and disputes related to trade tariffs.

The meeting took place following a phone conversation between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping last week. Trump stated that the conversation resulted in a "very positive conclusion for both countries."
