Death Toll of Austria Mass Shooting Rises to 11

1 day ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 21-year-old former student shot and killed 10 people at a high school in Graz, Austria, on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. The suspect took his own life after the rampage, in a national tragedy that shook the country that rarely faces armed violence.

As reported by CNN World, the shooting occurred at a high school in the northwest part of the city of Graz at around 10:00 a.m. local time. The death toll rose to 11 after one critically injured adult victim passed away on Tuesday night.

Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner confirmed that six of the deceased were female and three were male. The age range of the victims was between 14 and 18 years old. Another 12 students sustained injuries, some of them in serious condition.

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker immediately announced three days of national mourning in response to the tragedy, writing on X that “There are no words for the pain and grief.”

One of the victims was a 17-year-old French student. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has extended condolences to the victim's family and friends.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen commented on the tragedy: “It is difficult to bear when schools become places of death and violence.”

Armed violence is very rare in Austria, with a firearm murder rate of only 0.1 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2021, far below the United States at 4.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. Nevertheless, gun ownership in Austria is relatively high at 30 guns per 100 citizens.

This incident marks the worst mass shooting in modern Austrian history, leaving deep trauma for the 350 students who were at the school during the incident and their families anxiously awaiting news.

The suspect, who had previously attended the same school but did not graduate, used a rifle and pistol to carry out the mass shooting before shooting himself in a school bathroom. Authorities stated that the perpetrator acted alone and obtained the weapons legally.

On Tuesday, the Salzburger Nachrichten newspaper reported that the shooter had been a victim of bullying. However, there has been no independent verification of this claim.

The attacker reportedly shot students in two classrooms, one of which had been his former classroom. Local police wrote in a post on X quoted from Al Jazeera that they operated on the assumption that the perpetrator acted alone.

Investigators found a suicide note addressed to the suspect's parents while searching his residence. There were no other clues regarding the motive for the shooting.
