TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jack Patrick Dorsey, one of the founders of Twitter, which has now become the social media platform X, announced that he is currently developing an application called Bitchat, which can be used for messaging without an internet connection. Jack, who now leads Block.Inc., introduced this application through its personal X account.
"Bitchat: bluetooth mesh chat...IRC vibes," said the former Twitter boss in a post on X on Monday, July 7, 2025.
The new application is still in its beta version and is under review in Apple's TestFlight and GitHub. On the application testing platform, there are also explanations about how Bitchat works, including the use of Bluetooth mesh network for messaging.
According to the GitHub page cited by Dorsey, Bitchat sends secure and decentralized peer-to-peer messages via Bluetooth. Users do not need a server, nor do they need a phone number or account for privacy assurance.
In this Bluetooth mesh network, every device acts as both a client and a peripheral. Users can utilize other devices as message forwarding bridges. Dorsey said that messages are forwarded through peer devices and can reach distances of over 300 meters.
This new messaging application cannot be tracked because it does not have a server, account, or data collection. Users can even delete data without leaving a trace. Another advantage is the "rooms" feature, which uses hashtags to customize conversation topics. This feature is similar to those on X and Facebook. Users can tag each other by adding the "at sign" or "@" symbol, accompanied by a nickname or calling name.
According to a July 7, 2025, TechCrunch review, the Bitchat app is similar to Bridgefy, which is often used by demonstrators in Hong Kong. The app's ability to function offline makes it difficult for Chinese authorities to detect activists' communications.
Biz Stone, another co-founder of Twitter, also funded the development of Bridgefy. Its system is designed to aid messaging via Bluetooth, especially in locations with poor internet connections. "Useful for situations like finding friends at a busy music festival where cell service is spotty," according to the TechCrunch review.
