TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the giant sea wall construction could potentially address two primary issues faced by the region: land subsidence and clean water. "Hopefully, President Prabowo Subianto's directive on the giant sea wall can be implemented soon," said Pramono when met in East Jakarta on Monday, January 12, 2026.
According to Pramono, the project, if advanced, could benefit Jakarta greatly. Not only function as a tidal flood control, the giant sea wall also provides a long-term solution to the environmental crisis that has loomed over the coastal region.
The construction of Jakarta's sea wall has previously been delayed. Ciko Tricanescoro, Head of the Flood Control and Coastal Development Division at Jakarta’s Water Resources Agency (DSDA), said via messaging app on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, that “the delay is mostly due to budget availability.”
Despite the setback, the provincial government plans to resume the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) phase A project along Jakarta’s northern coast this year. Construction of the NCICD dike in Kompleks Pantai Mutiara, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, is among the key segments slated to restart.
“The construction at Pantai Mutiara will begin in 2025 using a multi-year scheme and is currently in the bidding phase,” Ciko added.
The NCICD dike project’s completion has been pushed back from the original target of 2028 to 2030. Ika Agustin Ningrum, then Acting Head of DSDA Jakarta, previously cited several reasons for the delay.
These include challenges in procurement of goods and services and the need for coordination with local fishers. "We hope for the infrastructure development to accommodate fishers' livelihood," said Ika in December 2024.
