Google Introduces Selfie Video Sign-in Option: How Does It Work?

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Google is introducing the option to log in using a selfie video as a new method to verify user identity.

As reported by Tech Crunch on Thursday, July 23, Google said this option is an alternative for users who cannot access their primary device or are locked out of their account.

To activate this login option, users are asked to record a selfie video by following a series of instructions, such as moving their head right, left, or nodding so the system can capture their face from various angles.

If users have difficulty logging in later, they can record a new selfie video. Google will then compare the latest recording with the video saved during sign-up to verify the authenticity of the user's identity.

Google stated that this feature is designed not only to recognize faces but also to ensure that the person in front of the camera is a real person, not a photo, doctored video, or deepfake content.

“When you use a selfie to sign in, we use multiple layers of security to help prevent impersonation attempts like fake photos and videos,” Google said.

The company explained that the system will match the most recent video with previously saved videos, while also asking users to perform simple gestures as proof that the video was recorded live. Furthermore, Google continues to implement standard security mechanisms to detect suspicious activity.

Google stated that video selfies are securely stored using encryption and remain protected even when not in use. Users can also delete these videos from their Google accounts at any time.
