TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is set to be deported to Greece on Monday, October 6, 2025, after being detained by Israeli forces from the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian convoy sailing toward Gaza to break the Israeli blockade.
According to Israel’s i24News, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Sunday, Thunberg will arrive in Greece alongside Greek nationals who were also detained by Israel after taking part in the flotilla mission. The report said a total of 165 activists are scheduled to be deported on the same flight.
Thunberg was among more than 400 activists, lawmakers, and lawyers from various countries who were detained in international waters after Israeli naval forces intercepted the aid flotilla on Wednesday. Some of the detainees have already been deported, while legal proceedings for others are still underway.
According to correspondence reviewed by The Guardian, Thunberg informed Swedish officials that she had been held in a cell infested with bedbugs and denied adequate food and water.
The British newspaper also cited another detainee who claimed Israeli soldiers forced Thunberg to hold an Israeli flag for a photo.
Other flotilla participants corroborated reports of abuse. Turkish activist Ersin Celik told Anadolu that Israeli troops “severely tortured Greta before our eyes" and "made her crawl and made her kiss the Israeli flag.“
Italian journalist Lorenzo D’Agostino described the 22-year-old as being “wrapped in an Israeli flag and paraded like a trophy.”
Israeli naval forces raided and seized the Global Sumud Flotilla on Wednesday, detaining more than 470 activists from over 50 countries. The flotilla was carrying humanitarian aid bound for Gaza, in an effort to challenge Israel’s long-standing blockade of the Palestinian enclave.
Israel has maintained the blockade on Gaza, home to nearly 2.4 million people, for almost 18 years. Since October 2023, Israeli airstrikes have reportedly killed more than 67,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, leaving the territory on the brink of collapse.
