How Did the M7.7 Philippines Earthquake Affect Indonesia?

6 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck the Mindanao region of the southern Philippines on Monday morning, June 8, 2026, triggered a minor tsunami that reached several eastern parts of Indonesia.

The earthquake also caused strong tremors across North Sulawesi and neighboring provinces, damaged homes, injured residents, and generated dozens of aftershocks.

According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake struck at 06:37 AM WIB. The epicenter was located in the sea about 244 kilometers northwest of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 47 kilometers.

BMKG said the shallow earthquake was caused by megathrust activity along a subduction zone, with an upward fault movement that generated tsunami waves across parts of eastern Indonesia.

The following is a breakdown of the earthquake's impact on Indonesia.

Tsunami Waves Recorded Across Eastern Indonesia

Following the earthquake, BMKG detected sea-level rises at several monitoring stations. The highest tsunami wave was recorded in Talengen, North Sulawesi, reaching 0.75 meters at 08:20 AM WIB.

Sea-level increases were also observed in Paleleh, Central Sulawesi, at 0.45 meters; Melonguane and Tanjung Sidupa in North Sulawesi at 0.32 meters each; Tahuna at 0.30 meters; Bitung at 0.29 meters; Ulu Siau at 0.18 meters; Ternate at 0.14 meters; and Loloda at 0.09 meters.

Although tsunami waves were recorded in several coastal areas, BMKG later confirmed that sea levels had returned to safe conditions and no longer posed a threat to the public. The agency officially lifted its tsunami early warning at 10:15 AM WIB.

Strong Tremors Felt in Several Provinces

Before the tsunami waves arrived, the earthquake was widely felt across eastern Indonesia.

The strongest shaking occurred in Miangas and Melonguane, where BMKG recorded an intensity of VI on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. At this level, tremors are felt by all residents and can cause minor structural damage, including falling plaster and damage to chimneys.

Siau and Tagulandang experienced intensity V MMI shaking, strong enough to wake most residents and cause objects to be displaced. Morotai, North Halmahera, and Manado recorded intensity IV MMI tremors.

Other areas, including Toli-Toli, Gorontalo Regency, Ternate, West Halmahera, Palu, Bitung, and East Bolaang Mongondow, experienced intensity III to IV MMI shaking. According to BMKG, the tremors in these areas were clearly felt indoors and were comparable to the vibration caused by a passing heavy truck.

Aftershock Activity Continues

BMKG reported that 20 aftershocks had been recorded by 10:00 AM WIB, with magnitudes ranging from 3.9 to 6.7. Two of the aftershocks were felt by residents.

The agency continues to monitor seismic activity and has urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant.

Damage Reports and Safety Measures

Initial assessments indicate limited damage in Indonesia. The North Sulawesi Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) reported that two houses in the Sangihe Islands Regency sustained minor damage as a result of the earthquake.

Authorities also reported three residents suffering minor injuries. Search and rescue personnel remain deployed in the affected areas to gather further information and assess any additional impacts.

Although the tsunami warning has been lifted, BMKG continues to advise residents to inspect buildings before returning to normal activities. The agency has warned that aftershocks could further weaken damaged structures.

BMKG's Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Wijayanto, urged residents to ensure their homes are structurally safe before re-entering them.

“If there is visible damage or cracking, residents should carefully assess the risks and avoid entering the building immediately,” he said.
