Israeli and Palestinian Researchers Develop New Wheat Variety

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli and Palestinian researchers have developed a new wheat variety that is more resistant to heat and drought, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU) said in a statement on Thursday, July 30.

The five-year project, involving HU and the Palestinian Al-Quds Public Health Society in East Jerusalem, aims to address the challenges of food production in the Middle East's warmer and drier climates, HU explained, as reported by Xinhua, citing ANTARA.

Climate change is shortening growing seasons and making rainfall less predictable, increasing pressure on global food crops, he added.

By combining expertise in plant breeding, genetics, and field trials, the research team produced a new wheat strain named "Ufuq".

HU said this strain can maintain productivity under less water and harsher conditions due to climate change, but did not provide further details about the strain.

Supported by funding from the Netherlands, the project shows how scientific cooperation can continue despite security and political difficulties, he added.
