TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump has warned that he will impose an additional 10 percent import tariff on countries within the BRICS economic bloc, accusing them of adopting anti-American stances.
“Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
This is not the first time Trump has directed criticism toward BRICS members. In late January, he claimed that the group had no chance of replacing the US dollar as the dominant global trade currency.
Trump also demanded that BRICS countries refrain from creating new currencies or supporting any alternatives that could undermine the US dollar. As one of the bloc's member states, how did Indonesia respond?
Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir
Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir emphasized that the BRICS Summit was never intended as a platform to oppose the United States or any other country.
He explained that the forum’s main goal is to enhance cooperation among developing nations in addressing shared global challenges.
“This forum is not intended to confront or act against any specific country or group of countries,” said Tata in an official statement delivered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Monday, July 7, 2025.
He added that the summit addressed a range of global topics, including multilateralism, health, and environmental issues, without conflicting with the interests of developing nations or other parties.
Arrmanatha also noted that the summit did not discuss Trump’s comments, which were made on the first day of the event.
“What is conveyed by the US President or other world leaders is beyond our control. What’s important to highlight is that many external developments do not represent the content or direction of discussions within the BRICS forum,” he said.
Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati
Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati acknowledged that the current global economy is in a state of turmoil.
“Today, we saw the President attending a BRICS meeting alongside world leaders, and at the same time, President Trump issued a statement labeling the BRICS group as unsupportive of the United States, which led to the threat of new tariffs," said Sri Mulyani during a working meeting with the House of Representatives at the Senayan Complex, Jakarta, on Monday, July 7.
She noted that such developments highlight the unpredictable and fast-changing nature of global affairs. Representing the government, she also expressed appreciation to all stakeholders who had scrutinized and offered input on the macroeconomic assumptions used in drafting the 2026 state budget.
