TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia, through the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), is collaborating with authorities in Malaysia to strengthen surveillance of protected fish species, including law enforcement against cross-border smuggling cases.
The Director General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance at the KKP, Pung Nugroho Saksono, stated that Indonesia and Malaysia discussed the issue of hunting and smuggling of protected fish species, including sea turtle eggs. This issue is a crucial problem that requires strong synergy.
"The hunting and smuggling of protected fish species, including sea turtle eggs, from Indonesia to Malaysia, has become a crucial issue, thus requiring synergy between the two countries," said Pung in a written statement on Saturday, September 4, 2025.
He explained that the governments of Indonesia and Malaysia have met to discuss strategic measures to combat cross-border smuggling of protected fish, plants, and wildlife in Jakarta on September 29-30. The meeting involved the Indonesian Initiative for Wildlife Rehabilitation (YIARI) and was attended by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD), the Royal Malaysia Police, relevant ministries/agencies in Indonesia, and several non-governmental organizations.
During the meeting, the two countries agreed on the need for a coordinated, measurable, and sustainable framework for effective counter-smuggling activities. "These measures are carried out through the exchange of information and intelligence, coordinated patrols and joint operations, capacity building and joint training among law enforcement agencies, as well as raising awareness and socialization among the public," said Pung.
The two countries also plan to form a Joint Working Group and hold regular meetings. "In these meetings, authorized personnel from Indonesia and Malaysia are committed to continuing to preserve biodiversity and eradicate cross-border crimes," said Pung.
He believes that with strengthened synergy between the two countries and supported by various non-governmental organizations, surveillance and protection of protected fish species will be strengthened. He hopes that this synergy will have an impact on sustainable marine and fisheries resource management.
