TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Quarantine Agency has confirmed that 1,600 dairy cows imported from Australia to Probolinggo, East Java, are free from dangerous diseases.
"For approximately the next 14 days, all dairy cows will remain at the Animal Quarantine Installation in Probolinggo," said Cicik Sri Sukarsih, Animal Quarantine Director, in a written statement on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
Cicik explained that the quarantine period will conclude only when a quarantine veterinarian declares the cows in good health. She estimates the process will be completed by mid-July.
These live cattle are part of the National Dairy and Meat Production Improvement Program (P2SDN). Through this initiative, the government has partnered with various entities, including the private sector, to supply 1 million dairy cows over five years, beginning in 2025.
Companies involved in this project include PT Japfa, through its subsidiary PT Santosa Agrindo Lestari, which partnered with PT Greenfields to import 1,100 dairy cows from Australia to Probolinggo. PT Kironggojoyo, meanwhile, imported 500 dairy cows to Banyuwangi.
The Indonesian Quarantine Agency will conduct thorough risk analyses, physical examinations, and laboratory tests at the animal quarantine installation to ensure the health of all imported dairy cows entering Probolinggo. Once cleared, the cows can be received by farmers who have partnered with Greenfields.
According to animal quarantine protocols, Cicik specified that the diseases targeted for examination and confirmed absence in the imported dairy cows are Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), Brucellosis, Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD), Enzootic Bovine Leukosis (EBL), and Paratuberculosis.
The Indonesian Quarantine Agency, under the decree of the Head of the Agency Number 2176 of 2025, has designated Tanjung Lembaga Port as the official entry point for imported dairy cows to Probolinggo.
