Investors Eye Jakarta Giant Sea Wall Project Worth Rp123tn, Minister Claims

1 day ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, claimed that investors are interested in funding the giant sea wall project. But reviews are underway, he said, and the government remains open to all parties.

"We do not want to be hasty because, once again, this project is major," said the minister nicknamed AHY during a press conference at the International Conference on Infrastructure (ICI) 2025 at the Jakarta International Convention Center on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

The giant sea wall project, limited to the region of Jakarta, requires around Rp123 trillion in budget. In Jakarta, the government plans to build a 41-kilometer-long sea wall.

The Indonesian government plans to build the sea wall on the northern coast of Java to protect the coastal communities from flooding in response to land subsidence and rising sea levels. AHY stated that seawalls and coastal barriers alone are not enough to protect coastal communities, and the government must address the issue from upstream to downstream.

"There must be a basic infrastructure approach that can strengthen the capacity to hold rainwater, for example," said AHY. "River normalization, polders, and reservoirs that prevent floodstreams."

Previously, AHY mentioned that the giant sea wall project is one of the projects offered in ICI 2025, due to its large-scale and long-term nature. "Not just one or two years in the future, so it requires credible, meaningful, and sustainable funding. This means the development must not stop halfway," said AHY on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
