Jakarta Reports No Damage After M6.5 Quake Hits Seribu Islands

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Seribu Islands in Jakarta were safe and reported no damage or casualties after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the area early Saturday, September 12, according to local authorities.

Munawar, a member of the Seribu Islands regency administration, said the earthquake had no significant impact on residents or the environment.

“The islands remain safe. There was no felt impact from the earthquake. Most, if not all, residents did not feel the earthquake directly and instead learned about it through media reports,” Munawar said in Jakarta on Sunday, September 13.

He said the islands remained safe for tourists to visit.

No Damage Reported Across Six Island Districts

Pulau Pari village chief Yusuf said local authorities had coordinated with neighborhood officials, the Indonesian military and police, and other agencies to monitor conditions after the earthquake.

“Residents did not feel the impact, and the environment is also safe. So, the Seribu Islands are safe to visit, especially Pulau Pari,” Yusuf said.

The Seribu Islands Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) said field monitoring showed that daily activities were continuing normally, with no reported damage or affected residents.

The agency monitored conditions across six administrative areas. Residents in Pulau Kelapa and Pulau Harapan reported no effects from the earthquake, while some residents in Pulau Panggang felt the shaking without any reported damage.

Similar conditions were reported in Pulau Tidung. Residents in Pulau Pari felt shaking for about five seconds, while some residents in Pulau Untung Jawa also felt the tremor, but no damage was reported to buildings or the surrounding environment.

The BPBD said it would continue monitoring earthquake information from Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) and the Jakarta provincial disaster agency.

The earthquake struck the Seribu Islands area at 4:23 a.m. local time on Saturday, according to the BMKG. The agency said the earthquake had no tsunami potential.

The epicenter was located at 5.81 degrees south latitude and 106.56 degrees east longitude, about six kilometers southeast of the Seribu Islands. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 376 kilometers.
