Los Angeles Declares Curfew as Protests Over Trump's Immigration Raids Escalate

1 day ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has imposed a curfew in the downtown area as protests against President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown enter their fifth day.

The curfew, covering 2.6 square kilometers, is in effect from 08:00 PM Tuesday to 06:00 AM Wednesday.

"Many businesses have been impacted or damaged. Last night, 23 businesses were looted, and if you drive through downtown LA, graffiti is everywhere and has caused significant damage to businesses and properties," Bass said at a press conference on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

"So my message to you is, if you do not live or work in downtown LA, steer clear of the area. Law enforcement will arrest those who violate the curfew, and you will be prosecuted," she added, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

Bass noted the curfew could remain in place for several days, stressing it applies only to a small portion of the city’s 502-square-mile area.

"I think it's important to convey this, not to downplay the vandalism and violence that occurred there. It's significant because it's very important to know that what's happening in this 1-square-mile area does not impact the city," she said.

"Some depictions of protests and violence give the impression that this is a crisis that is happening across the city, when it is not so."

The unrest follows immigration raids ordered by Trump, sparking demonstrations in cities nationwide, including New York, Chicago, and Atlanta.

California officials have strongly criticized the president’s deployment of National Guard and Marines to suppress the protests, accusing him of abusing his power.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, in a speech Tuesday night, condemned Trump’s actions. "That's when the decline began. He doubled down on the dangerous deployment of the National Guard by stoking the flames even harder, and the president – he did it deliberately," Newsom said.

Newsom has filed a lawsuit opposing the federal deployment, accusing Trump of targeting low-wage workers rather than serious criminals.

Meanwhile, Trump defended his decision during a speech to US Army troops at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

"Generations of military heroes did not spill their blood in distant lands only to watch our country being destroyed by invasion and third-world lawlessness here, at home, as is happening in California," he said.
"As the commander in chief, I will not let that happen. It will never happen."
