TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - North Korea and Russia discussed ways to boost culture and arts cooperation between the two countries, state media reported.
The agreement was reached during a meeting between North Korean President Kim Jong Un and Russian Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova in Pyongyang on Sunday, June 29, 2025, as reported by Anadolu.
According to a report by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the meeting took place at the headquarters of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea. The meeting was also attended by Russian Ambassador to North Korea Alexandr Matsegora.
The discussions between Kim Jong Un and Lyubimova took place a few days after Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu visited Pyongyang on his second trip in less than two weeks.
Lyubimova arrived in Pyongyang on Saturday, June 28, leading a delegation to commemorate the first anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between Russia and North Korea.
During the meeting, Kim praised the “broad and in-depth” exchange and cooperation seen across various sectors since the signing of the agreement.
Kim stated that such cooperation has made a tangible contribution to the joint development and well-being of the peoples of both countries.
Lyubimova said her visit came at a time when the friendship and solidarity between North Korea and Russia were more evident than ever. She described bilateral cultural cooperation as having reached “the highest level ever.”
Kim and Lyubimova also discussed future plans for bilateral cooperation and exchanges in the cultural sector and watched a performance by a visiting Russian art troupe and North Korean artists.
The two countries also signed a cultural cooperation agreement between their respective ministries of culture. North Korea and Russia have deepened bilateral cooperation in various fields, from military to cultural, since the signing of a joint defense agreement in June 2024 in Pyongyang.
