OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Atlas That Could Rival Google

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The presence of artificial intelligence has once again asserted itself more strongly with the launch of ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI's new AI-powered web browser. Built around ChatGPT, this new product aims to “rethink what it means to use the web,” as stated on the company’s official website.

ChatGPT Atlas Features

As the latest entrant in an increasingly crowded field of AI-driven browsers, Atlas offers users a more personalized and interactive web experience, supported by the integrated ChatGPT sidebar. Using this assistant, users can ask questions or engage with various elements of any website they visit, from summarizing content and comparing products to analyzing on-page data.

Even more impressively, users are given full control over their privacy settings, including what the browser remembers, how their data is used, and the specific privacy preferences applied during browsing. But that’s not all.

As highlighted by the BBC, OpenAI has also expanded its services by partnering with e-commerce platforms such as Etsy and Shopify, as well as booking services like Expedia and Booking.com, aiming to attract more users to engage with its online services.

Agent Mode for Paying ChatGPT Subscribers

Enhanced experiences await paying ChatGPT subscribers through the Agent Mode. This feature allows the AI to conduct autonomous searches tailored to the user's browsing context, enabling faster, more relevant results and a more hands-off, intelligent search experience.

Now Available for Apple’s macOS

Currently, ChatGPT Atlas is available globally for Apple’s macOS, with versions for Android, iOS, and Windows coming soon. According to various sources, ChatGPT has already surpassed 800 million weekly active users.

Could ChatGPT Atlas Rival Google Chrome?

Ultimately, the launch of Atlas marks a major step forward in the evolution of AI browsers, joining competitors like Perplexity’s Comet and Opera’s Neon. This move is also seen as a direct attempt to reduce Google Chrome’s dominance in the browser market, which is a real challenge evidenced by a 2.6% decline in Alphabet’s shares during afternoon trading in the US. However, Google has prioritized AI-generated responses in its search, known as AI Overview, over the past year.
