TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The courtyards of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem were packed with thousands of Muslim worshippers on Wednesday, marking the start of the four-day Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijri celebrations.
Muslims observe Eid al-Adha to honor the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim, or Abraham to Christians and Jews, to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, as an act of obedience to God's command.
To commemorate this ultimate act of devotion, Muslims perform the Qurbani ritual of animal sacrifice, distributing the meat to the poor and less fortunate.
This year's Eid al-Adha, one of the holiest occasions on the Islamic lunar calendar, is being observed by Palestinians against a backdrop of persistent Israeli ceasefire violations since October 2025.
According to Gaza health officials, over 880 people have been killed and 2,645 others wounded in ongoing Israeli military strikes since the truce between Israel and Hamas was brokered on October 10, 2025.
That initial agreement was intended to permanently halt Israeli genocide, which has claimed more than 72,000 lives, overwhelmingly women and children, and left more than 172,000 injured.
Israel's continuous offensive against the Gaza Strip since October 2023 has also resulted in the systematic destruction of roughly 90 percent of the besieged enclave's civilian infrastructure.
